Noel Molloy – Selected Audio Work 1983 - 1999
(Nyahh Records)
Since the late 70s, Roscommon multidisciplinary artist Noel Molloy has made strange, challenging works out of found objects and domestic detritus. Visit his website, and you’ll find contorted scrap metal sculptures of soldiers, dancers, kings and bears. You’ll see an Irish flag, painted across three bottles of holy water. You’ll see a baby’s pram, crudely repurposed into a sort of military vehicle. A rusty mask will stare back at you with a grotesque metallic grin. Molloy’s semi-figurative creations occupy an uncanny space that is tied to the familiar, but is outlandish enough to trigger unique, unpredictable responses. His feverishly out-there performance pieces engage the mind in a similar, synapse-sizzling way; costumes, set designs, abstract actions, cut-up audio and musical extracts allude to themes such as religion, conflict, history and environmentalism, but what it “means” is left entirely to the audience. Selected Audio Work 1983 - 1999, released on Leitrim’s Nyahh Records, stitches together the extracted sounds from some of these performances, leaving the mind to create its own wild, visual accompaniment. This is a collection of growling, hypnotic oddness, full of distorted voices, faint musical interjections and clattering environmental audio. It pulls you into its strange, tactile world, where the sounds of saw on wood, an inter-county fallout warning, and a crumpled clip of a 1930s pop tune become haunting choruses to a concrète symphony. It’s a fascinating document for the archives of experimental Irish art.

Between You and Me

is a series of online and in person events promoting Contemporary Art and Culture from leading Irish and Los Angeles based artists working in the visual arts, film, theatre, music and literature. The program focuses on bringing together our community through this difficult COVID-19 pandemic and connecting with new audiences through innovative creative digital platforms and engaging offline activities.

The Between You and Me series will include: a CIACLA Online Program which features over 100 artists' work presented across our social media; CICALA's Micro Moments, presenting a series of public performances and creative activations by Artists showcasing creative activism and artistry; and a series of cultural activities that will pair in-person events and online experiences, such as I Traveled West, a literature event which will produce a physical chapbook to coincide with an online presentation of Irish and American poetry.
“As we are all going through this strange moment of uncertainty together, forced to grow accustomed to a new way of living, presented with a space between our previous lives and the pressures of an unknown future, not what is to come. We have curated this exciting program full of engaging work to address this disoriented juncture and bring communities together, while also creating opportunities for artists to showcase their work and provide our audience with exciting new ways to engage with Contemporary Irish Culture.” ~ Matthew Nevin CIACLA’s Executive Director
CICALA's 2020-2021 program has been kindly supported by Mart Gallery & Studios,  Culture Ireland and The Emigrant Support Programme.
CIACLA’s Online Program provides an opportunity for Irish artists living worldwide and artists from all nationalities living in Los Angeles County to showcase their work across our social media platforms and website. During the summer of 2020 an Open Call was held from which over 100 artists were selected to present their work.

  •                            INTERPRETATIONS
  •     ‘INTERPRETATIONS’ is a joint endeavour, between the Singers Circle and some visual         artists from the region, to produce a combined album of Songs and Art Works.
  •      ‘INTERPRETATIONS’ came about after South Roscommon Singers Circle and guests             (Patsy Hanly, Cathy Jordan & The Songbirds) recorded twelve traditional and                         contemporary folk songs and they asked twelve local visual artists, each to listen to one          track, study the lyrics and produce a piece of art work that reflected their interpretation       of the story therein. Each of the twelve titles were drawn from a hat and allotted to the         individual artist and this extraordinary production is the result – a 12 inch vinyl LP               record of songs and an album/book of art work prints combined.
  •      The project was conceived and directed by Declan Coyne and was brought to fruition             with the cooperation, enthusiasm and dedication of the members of South Roscommon         Singers Circle, the various visual artists involved and Roscommon Co. Co. Arts Officer,         Mary Mullins. Martin O’Hara, as well as mixing and mastering, recorded all tracks live         at Murray’s, Knockcroghery, and Roscommon Arts Centre.

 PRISM OF FREEDOM
premieres at Chale Wote Street Art Festival, 20–26 August in James Town, Accra (GH) In September, Prism of Freedom will tour museums and cultural spaces around the world subscribed to The One Minutes Series.- featuring my video 'WALL'

The One Minutes Series of September is called Prism of Freedom and is curated by Ghanaian artists Va-Bene E. Fiatsi (crazinisT artisT). Prism of Freedom consists of 16 One Minutes by various international visual artists challenging the socio-political status of freedom. How can we re-interpret the world beyond the intimacy of our eyes? The series is a mixtape of 16 one-minute films on the future of freedom. The series premieres at Chale Wote Street Art Festival, 20–26 August in James Town, Accra (GH). In September, Prism of Freedom will tour museums and cultural spaces around the world subscribed to The One Minutes Series.

“Prism of Freedom serves as a platform to explore film and videos as language, dialect and gesture in articulating the importance of art as significant medium for socio-political dialogue and activating cultural change. The thematic concept of the series plays on the notion of postcolonial and post-religious perception of independency, and paradox of liberation with experimental spirit exploring human sense of liberation, freedom, limitations, spirituality, identity and intimacy. However, the series presents also videos which equally explore the politics of time and imagery as sensuous character of questioning our realities. How can we re-interpret the world beyond the intimacy of our eyes, body or other senses or how could we ride through the narrow technical vision of 2 perceiving a new world? Could the moving image complement our nonstoppable hallucination of the future of freedom or could it substitute rituals for our sense of realities?” Va-Bene E. Fiatsi (crazinisT artisT)

Participating artists:
Daniel Codina Kresiah Mukwazhi Henriette Hamer Noel Molloy Dan Pavsic Jean-Michel Rolland Jeremy Wiles-Young crazinisT artisT Female Handala Alvin Ashiatey SANOKA Alfie Dwyer Razan Matthew Lancit Hala Namer

Va-Bene Elikem Fiatsi (Ho, 1981) also known as crazinisT artisT is a Ghanaian multidisciplinary artist living and practicing in Ghana. crazinisT artisT got [sHe/it...]’s Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts - BFA (Painting) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana where [sHe/it...] is currently completing [sHe/it...]'s MFA. Since 2012, [sHe/it...] began an endless journey of investigating and questioning social constructivism of human existence and its relationship with the "culturality" of gender stereotypes and sexual misrepresentation.

The One Minutes is a global network devoted to moving image. Since 1998, The One Minutes has produced and distributed over 10,000 video works by artists from more than 120 countries. Every month, The One Minutes Foundation puts out a new series of 60- second films that investigate how we perceive and engage with moving image. Museums and cultural organisations around the world subscribe to the series.  vimeo.com/280719582

Sights and Sounds of Ireland Today
Exhibition March 16-31, 2018
Opening Reception: 7pm Friday, March 16

Solas Nua, in collaboration with Dupont Underground is proud and excited to present Sights and Sounds of Ireland Today or in Ireland’s native Gaelic language Radhairc agus Glórtha na hÉireann Faoi Láthair. It is an exhibition that explores the field of contemporary video art production in Ireland today. It is the first significant survey of Irish visual art to be presented in the Washington DC area.

The vision for this exhibition was to discover what Irish visual artists considered video art to be today and what they wanted to communicate through their work. One of the big questions when curating this exhibition was to determine what video art is and how it differs from film. Traditionally, video art in visual art was defined as differing from film in its disregard for the mechanisms of traditional movie-making (i.e. a plot) – while the video artist is concerned with exploring the medium itself, or to use it to challenge the viewer's ideas of space, time and form. Today however, that definition is no longer applicable as visual artists will adopt a range of styles and tools and frequently crossover to traditional filmmaking. Decisions on what works to include here were based on artistry, skill and subject matter. What do these works convey to us about Ireland, its artists and its people? You the viewer are invited to decide.

Opening night will feature curator, Jackie Hoysted in conversation with Andy Johnson of the Corcoran College of Art and artist, Jonah King.

Featured Artists: David Bickley, Myrid Carten, Conall Cary, Brian Crotty, Lisa Freeman, Ruth le Gear, Michael Hanna, Anita Groener, Jonah King, Pawel Kleszczewski & Kasia Zimnoch, Hugh McCabe & Suzanne Walsh, Noel Molloy, Jenny Newman, Leonard Sheil, Fifi Smith, Mieke Vanmechelen, Mary-Ruth Walsh, Adrian Wojtas and Sean Wrenn.
