New radio documentary puts focus on notorious 'Lady Betty', Roscommon's executioner
A documentary about the infamous Roscommon executioner Elizabeth Sugrue airs for the first time on Athlone Community Radio next week.
‘The Ballad of Lady Betty’ will be premiered on ACR 88.4fm on Saturday, November 18 at 6pm, and will be replayed on Monday, November 20 at 1pm.
Having been accused of murdering her own son, Elizabeth Sugrue, better known as Lady Betty, saved her own life at the gallows by offering to hang people on a day when the hangman was sick. She stayed on in that position for decades in the late 18th century.
The new radio documentary features an original ballad written and performed by Declan Coyne, who many will know from his involvement in the South Roscommon Singers Festival every October, and as a fine singer who has been contributing to South Roscommon Singing Circle for many years.
As co-producer of the new programme, Declan said: “In 2021, I composed a ballad on the life and times of Lady Betty. Having grown up just a few miles south of Roscommon town, I would have heard many stories about Lady Betty and her exploits as permanent executioner at the town jail. Most of the stories told depicted her as a wicked and evil monster, but I always had a kind of ‘a soft spot’ for her.
"After all, she must have been somebody’s daughter; she was a mother herself and apparently reared an upstanding son. So, in the ballad, I tried to put a human face on the Lady, while at the same time telling what we know of what, for her, was a tough and miserable life.”
‘The Ballad of Lady Betty’ documentary delves further into this extraordinary story and tries to understand the circumstances of her life a little better and what drove Lady Betty to do the things she did, which earned her the title 'The Woman from Hell'.
Among the contributors to the documentary include Padraig Walshe, who is a personal behaviour psychologist and broadcaster with strong family ties in Roscommon Town, Bairbre Ní Fhloinn, an Associate Professor of Folklore and Ethnology at the Department of Irish Celtic Studies and Folklore at University College Dublin and local historian Albert Siggins, a native of Roscommon Town.
Local historian, artist and writer, Dympna Molloy, who is a nationally acclaimed sculptor and poet is another contributor to the show, along with Noel Molloy, an internationally known visual and performance artist, based outside Roscommon town and local historian John Kerrigan and writer. Music is performed by local musician Patsy Hanley.
The production team comprises of Kyle McCallan, sound, Johnny Callaghan, sound mastering, produced and edited by Irena Cvetkovic.
The programme is supported by Coimisiun na Mean with the television licence fee.

The object is a 45 single vinyl jukebox record. After cleaning it, I listened to the song on one side titled 'Big Bill The Builder.’ After extensive research, I discovered it was a propaganda song in praise of William Hale Thomson. The truth is that he was an American politician who served as mayor of Chicago from 1915 to 1923 and again from 1927 to 1931.Known as "Big Bill", he is the most recent Republican to have served as mayor of Chicago. Historians rank him among the most unethical mayors in American history due to his alliance with Al Capone.
In recent years we have heard the words FAKE NEWS thrown about a lot. There is nothing new about the phrase. It is just another word for propaganda. As long as there are gains to be made from profit and power, this type of propaganda will continue to flourish, none so more than in the age of the internet and social media.

Why was your artist's book created? The book was created for a group exhibition which was titled Wexford Artists Book Exhibition an annual open submission exhibition which toured between Ireland and England . The book AT THE TABLE was created at the time of political upheaval in Northern Ireland and the phrase AT THE TABLE was used a great deal referring to the various political parties sitting down together to talk, to lunch at the same table. The book is a simple idea of a lunch setting , on the right are found objects whose colours are of the Irish flag plus some Irish postage stamps to create the connection, on the left are found objects whose colours are of the English flag with postage stamps to create the connection. The found objects used are pacifically chosen to symbolize various meanings which is left entirely to the viewer to interpret. The last pages of the book are empty of objects.

Noel Molloy: Art from Trash- How repurposing helps us, our relationships, and our environment. Synonyms - reuse, recycle, remodel, reprocess, recover, regenerate, save. To me, recover/regain is an important aspect of this definition, by looking at what has been eroded by the pursuit of money and power, technology, social media and policies that dehumanize. Noel Molloy is a visual and performance artist. His sculpture medium is found objects turned into semi figurative artworks. He performs at symposiums, festivals and events; curates exhibitions and events such as ARTS CABARET, and organised the international event CROSSROADS SYMPOSIUM '95. His work is shown in national and international selected exhibitions and he is regularly invited to exhibit and perform at festivals and symposiums. “Since the late 70s, Roscommon multidisciplinary artist Noel Molloy has made strange, challenging works out of found objects and domestic detritus. Visit his website, and you’ll find contorted scrap metal sculptures of soldiers, dancers, kings and bears. You’ll see an Irish flag, painted across three bottles of holy water. You’ll see a baby’s pram, crudely repurposed into a sort of military vehicle. A rusty mask will stare back at you with a grotesque metallic grin. Molloy’s semi-figurative creations occupy an uncanny space that is tied to the familiar, but is outlandish enough to trigger unique, unpredictable responses. His feverishly out-there performance pieces engage the mind in a similar, synapse-sizzling way; costumes, set designs, abstract actions, cut-up audio and musical extracts allude to themes such as religion, conflict, history and environmentalism, but what it “means” is left entirely to the audience.” This talk series was created by Pamela Samuelson of Embodywork LA and A. Laura Brody of Opulent Mobility. We asked our friends, colleagues, and inspirations what they could give a talk on for 40 minutes with no notes and no preparation, and they delivered. $10-30 suggested donation, no one turned away for lack of funds. 2023 International Artist Grand Prize Competition
This is a moment to celebrate for Taiwan now has the honor to take a look at the artworks of the best thriving artists from around the world. There are estimated 4,262 pieces of artworks submitted for the 2023 International Artist Grand Prize Competition created by artists from 76 different countries. The numbers talk. Not only is this tremendous feedback a huge triumph for the artists who now have the opportunity to introduce their work to the collectors in Taiwan, but also a great encouragement for Taiwan International Contemporary Association. The winner of this completion will get the chance to exhibit his/her artwork at the 2024 Art Revolution Taipei.
108 outstand in this extremely competitive contest and will be exhibited from 5th May until the 8th May 2023 at Art Revolution Taipei. One of the finalists will be announced winner on 31st August.
